High glutathione levels are associated with longevity – in fact, healthy people over 100 years of age all have significantly higher levels of glutathione than the general population. Here are some of the age preserving functions of glutathione that may explain why it could be the anti-aging compound we all should be getting more of:

  1. Glutathione is known to preserve telomeres (tail end of genes that dictate how many times the cell can regenerate) a process intimately connected to longevity.
  2. Glutathione helps reduce oxidative stress and the damaging effects on your cells
  3. Glutathione is a powerful player in your immune system where it has been shown to stimulate natural killer cell activity.
  4. Glutathione plays an integral part in removing dangerous toxins from your body.
  5. Glutathione helps prevent brain and nerve damage

So what is glutathione and how can we get more of it?

Glutathione is make predominantly in your liver. This compound is a master antioxidant and detox accelerator that controls critical aspects of aging and disease prevention. Glutathione has been described as the “mother of all antioxidants” and it is true!! Not only is it a powerful antioxidant but it also helps to recycle other antioxidants in your body like vitamin C and E.  Antioxidants are important because they help reduce oxidative stress in your body – and it is this oxidative stress that contributes significantly to the aging process and the progression of life-threatening diseases like cancer, heart disease, Parkinson’s and Alzheimers.

Glutathione also helps your liver to detoxify toxins that you are exposed to on a daily basis like pesticides, heavy metals, alcohol, xenostrogens like BPA and other toxic chemicals. Unfortunately, we live in a toxic soup and cannot always avoid exposure to toxins so it is critical to get the toxins out of your body as quickly as possible, helping to reduce your toxic burden.

The more glutathione you have = enhanced removal of toxins from your body.

Unfortunately as we age your body’s ability to make this critical compound decreases significantly.  By age 40 we are making 30% less and by 65, as much as 50% less … and this is in healthy individuals.  Those with genetic inefficiencies like MTHFR gene mutations, their glutathione production can be reduced by 50% or more.  It is estimated that nearly 1 in 3 people have this genetic variant!!

Medications may also deplete your body of glutathione. Acetaminophen (Tylenol), anti- seizure drugs, birth control pills and antidepressant medications are a few that rob you of vital glutathione.  If you are on any of these medications it is especially important to supplement with effective glutathione.

Since glutathione is so beneficial and powerful and a deficiency can lead to premature aging and a host of diseases, how can you make sure you are getting enough?

Glutathione is made in the body from three amino acids; glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine. So it is important to ensure healthy levels of these amino acids are present in your diet.  When taken in an oral supplement form, glutathione loses its super powers.  The digestive process transforms glutathione into an unfavorable oxidized form that adds to your body’s oxidative stress burden. That’s why the most effective way to give this life-saving compound is intravenously (directly into the blood stream).

Trying to boost glutathione levels with N-acetylcysteine (NAC) can be somewhat useful for healthier people , because it relies on that person’s ability to take the raw materials and make glutathione.  Liposomal glutathione has been shown to boost glutathione levels and impact health.  At Glow we recommend using the liposomal form of Glutathione between IV infusions.
